Children’s Book Covers

The pain of designing a great book cover and then the payoff is something to write about. It is almost as important as the book itself, at least as far as grabbing someone’s attention.

For this book it took about seven months.

So here was our process…

It starts with a few sketches of ideas:

As you can see there are two different ideas coming forward, one from my illustrator and one from me. One was going to be half color and half black and white and the other was going to be in color and then Nathaniel going into black and white. So the second idea prevailed and we began taking the cover to the next level.

So here we have a good idea and theme. The pen is very cool but some of the other ideas need to be worked out.

So here is a couple of different versions of that original idea carried through. Now we decide what we like and don’t like and take the plunge and take the necessary time to create a great cover.

Going forward you will see that we kept some of the ideas but let the other ideas die their own death. What we kept was the pen, the little blue oval that says book one and the flying dragon

Unfortunately wordpress can’t upload files that big so our journey on the book cover ends here. I will have to upload the image to either facebook or to pinterest. We went through four more versions until we finally found something that we can build on and perfect.
