Literary Device – Assonance, Consonance with a little Epizeuxis

posted in: Literary Toolbox | 4

Here was a fun paragraph to write. Sometimes the words just flow like water over rock and it doesn’t take too much to help craft the sentence.

“What the…” Nathaniel didn’t even bother to finish the sentence, but paused and looked around the cottage. These people were just plain crazy. The broken clocks, the sound of alarms and their aftershocks, the half-buried blocks, and Ingvill with her messed up earlocks and high knee socks and the wandering sheep and other livestock, and the mysterious door knock left them alone to talk. All they could do was talk, talk, talk.

Here is another few paragraphs using Epizeuxis.

“Yeah but you said the 300-second minute is perfect, so how can you improve it?”

“Well there’s perfect, and then there’s perfect-perfect. Until I know for sure that I can’t further perfect the passage of time, then it’s only perfect, not perfect-perfect.”

“So that is why your cottage is perfectly messy. You’re trying to perfect time and it must be a messy business trying to perfect something that is already perfect, yes?”

“By Jove I think you are starting to understand our dilemma. Perfect doesn’t mean perfect-perfect.”
